Prolific Pl2303 Usb To Serial Adaptor Driver Linux Mint
WARNING: If you receive one of these and it does not work straight away in Windows (any version) then it is a counterfeit Chinese knockoffs according to Prolific (source: I would suggest your return it immediately and report to Amazon, but if you're like me and you didn't test it on Windows right away, follow the instructions on left brain tinkering blog (source: It really works. I ordered this cable to be used with a Raspberry Pi connected to a Windows 8 computer (Microsoft Surface Pro).
The cable was detected just fine by Windows 8, but the device would not start. After some research, I discovered that the HXA chip model is not supported by Prolific for Windows 8, and that is what is in this cable.
So warning: if you want to use Windows 8, then this is not the cable for you. Perhaps more research before I purchased this I could have figured that out, but it isn't made very clear. Regardless, this cable works just fine with Windows 7, and I was able to implement a workaround on Windows 8 to get it to work. The workaround is to use the Prolific 1.5.0 drivers (no longer available on Prolific's website, and not supported on Windows 8). You also have to turn off the automatic update of windows drivers, which is not recommended. So, although this workaround works, it isn't optimal and is disappointing.

The uplcom driver provides support for various serial adapters based on the Prolific PL-2303, PL-2303X and PL-2303HX USB-to-RS232 Bridge chips. The device is accessed through the ucom(4) driver which makes it behave like a tty(4).
Giving 4 stars - product works fine and quality meets price. Mfc rich edit control image in excel. Wish I knew it wasn't compatible with Windows 8, but glad I have work around. I received this in about a month after ordering as it comes from China. The comments made about chipset fraud is patently false. I conducted a hardware check and it checks out as genuine. After much research, I was able to successfully unbrick a Manhattan RS-1933 FTA satellite receiver.
The correct software is available online but you must search real closely for it. The best place to search for the software would be where they either sell it or manufacture it. It took a little soldering to get the pins in the TTL socket but once you have a solid understanding of what you must do to reflash the device, you will have a full working receiver again.
Thanks to Amazon for making this device available to us who are always learning. For the price it is a good deal. The time I spent to find out it's a clone prolific chip (guessing on spelling on the prolific name). If you buy it, roll back your driver to their older version and it will work fine (8.3.3 or something). Not sure who to fault here. I bought it, was a clone I guess, the real companies old driver made it work so they made the new driver break the clone maybe. Amazon lets them sell it, so I give, I am working but I did spend time that I would have gladly spent $10 more for a plug and play.
Mine all work, I bought two. Working on XP through Windows 10 by the way. Don't buy this for Windows8+, buy one of the 'Windows 8 supported' products instead 1. The chip in this product is counterfeit, the Windows' Prolific driver will fail with Error 10 as explained in Prolific's website 2. Additionally the chip is the old version (XA/HXA) which Prolific won't support on Windows 8 and higher. Green and white wires are swapped around wrt tutorials (this is advertised in the description above, though: 'Cable length 1 m Line sequence defined Red +5 V Black GND Green RXD White TXD') I'm keeping it to avoid the hassle of returning it and because you can get an old driver for Windows 8+ by googling around (PL2303_Vista_02.exe). Great alternative to the RS232-to-TTL Adapter (no soldering nor splicing power required).
Needed to remove the black connectors surrounding the metal connectors so they could fit to the hard drive jumper block (used a tiny screw drive to lift the plastic tab, and they slide right out). Windows 7 found the driver on it's own. Had some issues with Putty opening the COM port, but found another open source application called Realterm, which worked great (just connect RX and TX together to ensure the cable is functioning correctly). Otherwise just followed the directions found on the web for fixing the drive.
This was the first of two counterfeit adapters I purchased on Amazon. It will not work on Windows 7, as the Prolific driver gives an error code (10) whenever this adapter is plugged in. If you're looking to use a real and solid (and inexpensive) USB->RS232 adapter, search Amazon for the CableMax version, which appears to have a valid Prolific chip inside (works fine under Windows). Note that this adapter *will* work, under Linux, since the open source driver doesn't perform a validity check like the Windows driver. Also note that only Tx and Rx signals are presented, so this is of very limited utility. I did test it under ArchLinux, using it to capture the boot/debug log of an embedded board, where Tx/Rx was all I needed. But for usage Windows, it is DOA.
