You'll get a kick out of this (read your post). I use FRAPS (avi) and then use Win Movie Maker to glue together the Fraps clips and save as wmv to reduce the file size. A 7 min movie is reduced to 50 Mb or so. That is the usual. Monday (Sunday night) WMMaker would not save my video, as is the usual. This time it gave error.

So this 'video business' is a mess. Seems like MS is doing things to us XP (and Vista and Win 7/8) users that makes us want to go to Win 10. Half of the internet is about MS messing their PC setup with updates, etc. They work overtime over there don't you know.
